A Compassionate Expert in Colorectal Surgery

Dr Cheryl Lau graduated from the National University of Singapore’s medical school in 2003, before completing advanced surgical training at National University Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital. In 2012, she was awarded advanced surgery fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, along with a Master of Medicine in Surgery.

Dr Cheryl’s passion for advancing her skills took her to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the United States, where she completed a year-long fellowship in advanced colon and rectal surgery under the mentorship of Prof. Philip Fleshner and a team of senior colorectal surgeons. During this time, she deepened her expertise in the management of colorectal diseases and proctology. Dr Cheryl has published extensively in her field and co-authored textbook chapters for surgeons, contributing significantly to the advancement of colorectal surgery and inflammatory bowel diseases.

Upon returning to Singapore, Dr Cheryl became one of the pioneering surgeons at Jurong Health Campus (NUHS) and played a key role in hospital planning. She was appointed as the Trauma Surgery lead and Chief Surgeon for Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, where she helped steer the hospital through its first successful Ministry of Health Emergency Preparedness Mass Casualty exercise in 2018.

As a dedicated educator, Dr Cheryl has trained the next generation of surgeons. She served as the Residency Program Director for Surgery-in-General Residents and the Research Director Lead. She is also a Clinical Lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and a teacher for the national FRCS Viva course. Dr Cheryl has received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the Best Teacher (Surgery) Award, recognising her commitment to nurturing future surgeons.

Throughout her public hospital career, Dr Cheryl received multiple research grants for clinical quality research and authored numerous publications in renowned journals like Annals of Surgery. She is also an invited reviewer for various international journals.

Above all, Dr Cheryl places patient-centred care at the heart of everything she does. Her dedication to holistic patient care and her belief in working alongside her patients to achieve the best possible health outcomes have earned her annual awards for clinical care, including Service Ambassador and Service Quality Champion awards.
